Rinjani Trekking Route

Rinjani Trekking Route

Recommended ascent route of Mount Rinjani National Park.

Mount Rinjani has six official trekking routes approved by the National Park Authority (TNGR). Each route offers a completely different landscape, difficulty level, and final destination

The official 2026 trekking season runs from April 1st until late December. The park closes annually from January to March due to heavy monsoon weather.

The 3 Primary Routes (Connected to the Summit & Lake)

These three routes are the most popular because they are physically interconnected. Hikers routinely go up one trail and exit through another to see the entire national park circuit.

1. Sembalun Route (East Lombok Entrance)

  • Best For: Reaching the true 3,726m Summit.
  • Landscape: Starts with wide, rolling savannah grasslands before transitioning into a very steep, dusty volcanic ash climb up to the Sembalun Crater Rim (Plawangan Sembalun).
  • Pros/Cons: The absolute fastest way to reach the summit, but there is zero shade. The sun exposure can be brutal.
  • Common Packages: 2D1N Summit or 3D2N Full Circuit (exiting via Senaru or Torean).

2. Senaru Route (North Lombok Entrance)

  • Best For: Lush scenery, crater rim views, and families.
  • Landscape: A continuous, steep climb under the canopy of a dense tropical rainforest. It protects you from the sun but is highly humid with massive tree root obstacles.
  • Pros/Cons: Reaches the spectacular Senaru Crater Rim. This rim offers the best direct sunset views over Segara Anak Lake. However, it is a very long, relentless upward slog.
  • Common Packages: 2D1N Senaru Crater Rim (no summit) or 3D2N Full Circuit

3. Torean Route (North Lombok Entrance)

  • Best For: Pure visual drama and epic photography.
  • Landscape: Follows a deep, majestic river canyon flanked by towering emerald cliffs, flowing waterfalls, and natural hot springs.
  • Pros/Cons: Known as the most photogenic trail on Rinjani. It is a much more gradual walk to Segara Anak Lake compared to the steep drops of Senaru/Sembalun. However, it does not lead directly to the summit, and some narrow ridge sections can feel unsafe for those afraid of heights.
  • Common Packages: Used almost exclusively as a spectacular exit route for 3D2N or 4D3N trips starting from Sembalun.

The 3 Southern Routes (Quieter, Eco-Tourism Trails)

These trails are much less crowded, harder to book, and cater to travelers who prefer raw nature over hitting the crowded northern peaks.

4. Tetebatu Route (South Lombok Entrance)

  • Best For: Avoiding crowds and seeing the “Second Summit” (Mount Sangkareang, 3,200m).
  • Landscape: Begins in local black-monkey mahogany forests and transitions into dense jungle terrain. It provides a spectacular southern view of the lake from a completely different angle.

5. Timbanuh Route (South-East Lombok Entrance)

  • Best For: Advanced trekkers looking for a raw, unmanicured trail.
  • Landscape: Passes through dense southern wilderness and fields of edelweiss flowers. It takes you straight up to the southern crater rim ridge.

6. Aik Berik Route (Central Lombok Entrance)

  • Best For: Wildlife observation and rich biodiversity.
  • Landscape: A heavily protected forest trail rich in natural springs, wild orchids, and native birds. It is a gentler hike but does not connect easily to the main volcanic summit area.

Which trekking route we recommend to you?

The best trekking route depends entirely on your fitness level, your priorities (views vs. shade), and whether you want to stand on the 3,726-meter summit. Because these trails connect around the crater lake, most hikers don’t choose just one; they combine two routes into a multi-day traverse.

Here is a breakdown to help you choose the best route or combination for your trip:

The Verdict: Best Overall Combinations

If you want the ultimate Mount Rinjani experience, you should book a 3-Day, 2-Night (3D2N) Traverse Tour.

  • Sembalun ➔ Senaru (The Classic – Highly Recommended for First-Timers): You climb up through the Sembalun savannas on Day 1, push to the true summit on Day 2, and descend through the shaded Senaru jungle on Day 3. This gives you the best of both worlds and protects your knees on the way down.
  • Sembalun ➔ Torean (The Ultimate Adventure – Best for Landscape Lovers): You enter via Sembalun to conquer the summit, but exit through the dramatic Torean canyon. This is widely considered the most visually stunning trek on the island, but it requires great balance and confidence with heights.

Which Single Route is Right for You?

Choose Sembalun if:

  • Your main goal is to stand on the highest peak of Lombok (3,726m).
  • You want an easier, flatter start to your hike on Day 1.
  • You do not mind hiking for hours under direct tropical sunlight.

Choose Senaru if:

  • You want a shorter, safer hike (e.g., a 2D1N trek) that skips the brutal summit push but still offers world-class views of the crater lake.
  • You prefer trekking in cool, humid shade rather than open sun.
  • You want a family-friendly or beginner-friendly mountain experience.

Choose Torean if:

  • You are an experienced hiker looking for unique, jaw-dropping geography (waterfalls, vertical cliffs, and emerald rivers).
  • You have a good head for heights and do not mind narrow, steep paths with sheer drops.
  • You want to see a side of Rinjani that most standard tourists completely miss.
