Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani is located in the North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Mount Rinjani, or Gunung Rinjani, is the second-highest mountain in Indonesia. At 3,726 meters tall, climbing to the top is one of the most exhilarating experiences in Indonesia.

Mount Rinjani lies within the Gunung Rinjani National Park. The park covers 41,330 hectares and sits inside a major biogeographical transition zone (Wallacea). This is where the tropical flora and fauna of Southeast Asia meet that of Australasia. It was established in 1997 and is one of over 40 throughout Indonesia.

How do you get to Mount Rinjani?

You can fly to Lombok International Airport or take a ferry or fast boat from Bali. Once you arrive in Lombok, you can take a taxi or other transportation to a starting point for the trek.

Fly to Lombok:

  1. Fly to Lombok International Airport (LOP) in Tanak Awu, Central Lombok District. Airlines that fly to Lombok include Garuda, Lion Air, Silk Air, Air Asia, and Trans Nusa
  2. Drive from the airport to Senaru or Sembalun Lawang, the starting point for the trek.

Take a slow ferry.

  • The schedule is daily every hour from Bali to Lombok island. The public ferry from Padangbai, Bali, to Lembar, Lombok, takes about 4–5 hours.

Come by fast boat from Bali.

  • The fast boat leaves from Amed and Padang Bai, Bali, and takes about 2 hours to Bangsal Harbor, Lombok.

Which route is the best for trekking Mount Rinjani?

The best route to climb Mount Rinjani depends on your fitness level, your time, and which parts of the volcano you want to see. The most recommended routes are Sembalun, Senaru, and Torean.

Sembalun:

  • A good option for families and those with limited time
  • Offers views of the sand savanna
  • Available to the summit by 2d1n trekking program. Requires a good level of fitness

Senaru:

  • A good option for those who want to explore the crater rim, lake, and hot spring
  • To the summit Rinjani, only available at 3d2n trekking program.

Torean:

  • A longer route from the other route.
  • The first part of the trek is through a tropical rainforest
  • The route passes by Penimbungan waterfall

Trekking Rinjani preparation.

Knowing what you should prepare in advance to join the trekking program will be great. Here is the list:

  • Teluk Kode/ Bangsal Harbor to Senaru village is approximately an hour and 25 minutes by private car
  • Gilis to Bangsal harbor is approximately 30 minutes by public boat.
