The evening before the hike, we received a detailed briefing about the route, weather conditions, and what to expect, which helped us feel both physically and mentally prepared for the adventure. After an early breakfast the next morning, we were picked up and driven to the entrance of the national park where the trek began. We hiked alongside our guide, Supi, and two incredible porters who carried everything needed for the journey, including tents, food, water, and cooking equipment. Watching them move so quickly and effortlessly up the mountain while carrying such heavy loads was truly impressive. The hike to the campsite took about seven hours, with four rest stops along the way. At the second stop, the porters prepared a freshly cooked lunch that exceeded all expectations. Once we arrived at camp, we were welcomed with snacks and offered coffee, tea, or hot chocolate while taking in the incredible scenery. One important thing to know before booking this trek is that it is not an easy hike. The trail involves six to seven hours of continuous uphill climbing on steep and uneven terrain, so a reasonable level of fitness is required. While it is absolutely achievable for active people, you should come prepared for a physically demanding day. Renting trekking poles was one of the best decisions we made and we highly recommend them, as they made both the ascent and descent much more manageable. Our guide, Supi, was fantastic throughout the entire experience. He was friendly, encouraging, knowledgeable, and made the challenging climb much more enjoyable. We always felt safe and well taken care of. The views from the campsite were simply breathtaking. From our tent we could see the crater lake, the volcano rising from its center, and even the summit of Mount Rinjani in the distance. With binoculars, we could actually watch hikers making their way toward the summit. Watching the sunset and sunrise over the crater was an unforgettable experience and easily one of the most beautiful landscapes we have ever seen. Be prepared for cold temperatures during the evening and early morning, and don't be surprised if you encounter a bit of rain. Bringing enough warm layers is essential for a comfortable night at camp. This trek is challenging, rewarding, and incredibly well organized. Between the amazing guide, the hardworking porters, the delicious meals, and the stunning scenery, it was an experience we will never forget. We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a true adventure in Lombok.
