The Three Hidden Gems in Flores Island.

1. Wae Rebo Village – The village above the cloud

Wae Rebo is a centuries-old Manggarai village in Flores, Indonesia, famous for its seven iconic cone-shaped traditional houses known as Mbaru Niang. Often referred to as the “Village Above the Clouds,” it is located at an altitude of approximately 1,100–1,200 meters above sea level.

Highlights of Wae Rebo Village.

  • Cultural Heritage. Awarded the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award in 2012 for its commitment to preserving traditional architecture and communal lifestyles.
  • Unique Architecture. The 15-meter-high Mbaru Niang house has five levels used for various purposes, including living quarters, food storage, and seed storage.
  • Traditional Welcome. Visitors must participate in the Waelu ceremony led by village elders to request permission and protection during their stay.
  • Living Traditions. The community relies on agriculture, particularly coffee, and maintains ancestral rituals such as the annual Penti harvest thanksgiving ceremony.

2. Nuca Molas – Jurassic Park of Flores Island

Nuca Molas is a remote, crescent-shaped island off the south coast of Flores, frequently dubbed the “Jurassic Park of Indonesia” for its dramatic limestone cliffs. Dense forests and prehistoric-looking savanna landscapes. In the local Manggarai language, the name literally translates to “Beautiful Island”.

Highlights of Nuca Molas

  • Savanna “Jurassic”. Explore vast, open grasslands where wild deer, cattle, and horses roam freely against a backdrop of rugged hills.
  • Nuca Molas Lighthouse. Climb this iconic landmark for 360-degree panoramic views of the Sawu Sea and the southern coast of Flores.
  • Unspoiled Snorkeling. The surrounding waters are a sanctuary for turtles, dolphins, and colorful coral reefs, with excellent visibility due to the lack of mass tourism.
  • Hidden Cave. Visit Goa Kelelawar (Bat Cave), a natural limestone formation inhabited by thousands of bats.
  • Unique Culture. Unlike most of Flores, which is predominantly Catholic, the small community on this island is mostly Muslim, with a cultural heritage linked to the Bugis and Bima groups.

3. Lembor Spider ricefield

The town of Lembor is famous for its vast and fertile rice fields, with iconic spider web-shaped rice fields (known as Lingko) mostly located further east in Cancar, near Ruteng.

Highlights of Lembor Spider Ricefield.

  • Flores Rice Barn. This is the largest flat rice field area on the island, offering a rare sight amid the rocky and rugged terrain of Flores.
  • Munting Viewpoint. A hidden viewpoint where you can see smaller and unique Lingko (spider web) rice fields without the crowds found at other famous sites.
  • Traditional Irrigation. You can see one of the oldest and most vital irrigation systems in the region, which transforms the valley into a sea of green or gold depending on the season.
  • Mount Belang View. These rice fields are bordered by the dramatic Mount Belang, providing the perfect backdrop for “Jurassic” Flores landscape photos.
  • Local Farming Life. This is the best place to see water buffalo working in the fields and locals practicing traditional Manggarai farming techniques firsthand.

Essential tips if you join 3 days Hidden Gem Flores Island trip.

Gear for Wae Rebo (The Trek & Village)

  • Sturdy Hiking Shoes: Essential for the 3–4 hour uphill trek, which can be rocky, steep, and slippery.
  • Warm Sleeping Clothes: Temperatures in the highlands can drop significantly at night (around 12°C–20°C); bring a light jacket or sweater and warm socks.
  • Raincoat/Poncho: Rainfall is frequent in this mountainous region, especially if traveling during the wet season (Nov–March).
  • Small Backpack: Use a comfortable daypack for the trek. You can often store larger luggage at a lodge in Denge village.
Headlamp/Flashlight: Critical for navigating the village at night after the limited electricity (usually 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM) is turned off.

Gear for Nuca Molas (The Island)

  • Dry Bag: Highly recommended for boat crossings to protect cameras and electronics from splashes or rain.
  • Swimwear & Quick-Dry Clothes: For Labuan Taur Beach and snorkeling; quick-dry fabrics are better for the humid climate.
  • Sun Protection: A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen are necessary for the exposed coastal areas.
  • Sandals/Flip-flops: Useful for the beach and for moving between huts in the village.
