The 2-Day Itinerary (via Sembalun)

This route starts and ends in Sembalun Village, covering roughly 25 km in total.

Day 1: Sembalun to Crater Rim (Plawangan Sembalun)

Distance: ~8–10 km | Time: 6–8 hours.

  • Start at 8:00 AM from Sembalun (1,156m). The trail begins with gentle grasslands before a steep climb through the “Seven Hills of Regret”.
  • Camp overnight at the Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639m) for sunset views.

Day 2: Summit Push & Descent

Distance: ~15 km | Time: 10–12 hours total.

  • 2:00 AM: Start the “Summit Attack” in the dark. This 3–4 hour climb is on loose volcanic sand where you often take two steps up and one step back.
  • 6:00 AM: Sunrise at the Summit (3,726m).
  • 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM: Descend back to the crater rim for breakfast, then all the way down to Sembalun village.

Critical Considerations

  • Difficulty: Rated as hard/advanced. It requires walking an average of 8.5 to 11 hours per day.
  • Preparation: Experts recommend stair climbing and cardio training for at least 3 weeks before the trip.
  • Temperature: Nights at the rim drop to 8-10°C, while the summit can be as cold as 5-7°C with high winds.
  • Guide Services: Professional operators like Rinjani Samalas or Green Rinjani provide full logistics, including porters, meals, and gear.

Comparison with 3-Day Trek

While the 2-day trek is efficient, it skips the crater lake (Segara Anak) and hot springs. If you want a more balanced experience that includes the lake, the 3-Day 2-Night package is the most popular choice among travelers.
